Thomas Lee Otto from Douglas, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Appledorn Assisted Living in Holland, Michigan. Thomas was born November 21, 1930 in Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Michigan to the loving parents of James Otto and Edith (Allen) Otto. He grew up in Lansing where he would graduate from East Lansing High School in 1949. After high school, Tom would go on to join the Navy under the Truman Bill. He would serve 1 year of active duty and 6 years in the reserves in which he served faithfully and honorably. Tom would go on to marry the love of his life, Dorothy (Reddy) Otto in 1965. He wanted to become a teacher to continue his servanthood that stemmed from his training in the military. He would further continue his education at Michigan State University where he received his Master's Degree in Education in 1967. Tom would take his skills and become a teacher in Business Law and Typing at Groves High School in Birmingham, Michigan. He also loved sports and went on to coach JV wrestling and football. He was a huge MSU Spartan fan and always wore a Spartan hat. Go green and white!! Tom retired after decades of faithful dedication and service to his community. Tom and Dorothy moved to the Reddy Cottage on First Street in Douglas, Michigan in 1986.
Thomas is preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy (Reddy) Otto; and brothers, James, Allen and Jack Otto.
Thomas is survived by his son, John (Robbie) Otto; daughter, Mary (James) Johnson; brother, Richard (Lorayne) Otto; sister, Mary Lou (Jack) Fahres; grandkids, Dayne Otto and Blake (Amber) Otto; and a great-grandson, Grey Otto.
The family will be having a memorial service on Friday, April 23, at the Community Church of Douglas at 1:00pm, after which they will greet friends and share light refreshments until the time for the inurnment at the Douglas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Church of Douglas. Chappell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Service Details. Service
