On Thursday, April 26, 2018, Terry Benewich passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving partner, Kirk Johnson. He was 68. Terry was born in Aurora, Illinois on May 18th, 1949 to Sigmund and Marian Benewich. He graduated from Lewis University in 1971 with a Bachelor's Degree in History. He was proud of the time he spent in the Peace Corp working in Guatemala. His career in public service from 1976-2007 eventually led to his position as Regional Director of the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training for the US Department of Labor. Terry met his soulmate, Kirk Johnson, in 2000 and they enjoyed an eighteen year relationship. Terry had a passion for fused glass and gave his art to family and friends as presents who were touched by his generosity. He enjoyed history, gardening and the family dog Sparky. Friends and family will remember his delicious, homemade pizzas. Terry was known for his humor, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. He was the consummate "true gentleman." He strove to find the best in others and focused on doing good in his life. He is survived by his sister, Kathy (Alan) Lentz, his brother, Mike (Debbi) Benewich, his step-brothers James (Nancy) Baxter and Kevin Baxter, and his step-sister, Kathy Baxter. He is also survived by his nephews, Joel (Jessica) Benewich, Matthew (Aarti) Lentz, Peter Lentz, Brian (Jenny) Baxter, Phillip (Anna) Wiese, Jeremy (Angela) Baxter and his nieces Katie (Nate) Landers, Beth Baxter, Paige Wiese, Kathryn Fiorelli, Jennifer Baxter, Jessica (Donnie) Pollack and Jolene Baxter, his aunt Elaine and Uncle Ed Darr, his dear Aunt Mary Alice (Bob) Darr and several delightful grandnephews and grandnieces. Terry was preceded in death by his father, Sigmund Benewich, his mother, Marian Benewich Baxter, his step-father, James Baxter, and his sister- in-law, Sue Baxter. The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving support, kindness and care given to Terry during his final weeks by close friends Richard Schaub and Tim Dalrymple. A Celebration of Life will be held at Kirk and Terry's residence, 2754 60th St, Fennville, MI 49408 on Saturday, August 11th from 6-10 pm.
