Shirley Elaine (Dill) Bush, 78, of Wellston, MI, and Winter Springs, FL, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at her home in Wellston. Born May 14, 1931, in Kalamazoo, the oldest of four children, Shirley and her sister Margaret were inseparable in their activities in Girl Scouts and the Episcopal Church youth group. Margaret died at an early age from lung cancer and Shirley developed a special bond with her children, Mary Titman and Charles Taylor. Shirleys younger sisters and their families were known to have enjoyed many family gatherings at the cabins in Wellston. On June 13, 1953, in Kalamazoo, MI, Shirley married Lionel Dale Bush. The Bush family also enjoyed many family gatherings and family events in Fennville, MI with Dale's family: sisters, Jo Ann Moore, Sally Joostberns, Nancy and Terry Looman, and brother Dick and Bobbie Bush. Shirley graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor's of Arts in Elementary Education and later completed master's level coursework to obtain her Reading Specialist Certificate for the State of Michigan. A middle school reading and english teacher, Shirley retired from Kentwood Public Schools. Shirley's retirement avocation was watercolor painting and wine tasting. Shirley exhibited her paintings in several shows in Manistee and the Orlando, FL, area. She enjoyed wine tasting all over the world, including in California with her sister Sharon Hewitt. Shirley's charitable work included being a Girl Scout Leader and Episcopal Church Alter Guilds member. A strong believer of Christian education, Shirley also taught and supported Episcopal, Lutheran and Methodist Summer Bible Schools and Church Sunday Schools. Her surviving family include her husband Lionel Dale Bush, daughter Peggy Lynne and Rodney Meli of Lake Mary, FL; sons David Bush of Belfry, MT, and Christopher Bush and Kim Anderson of Manistee, MI; grandchildren Brenda Meli, Wendy Meli, Katelyn Bush and Samantha Bush; sister Sharon and Michael Hewitt of Jackson, CA, and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother, Helen L. Kelley Hearnshaw, father Charles Hearnshaw, and sisters Margaret Taylor and Susan Gielczyk. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, Aug, 7, 2009, at St. Marks Episcopal Church 134 N. Division St. in Grand Rapids, MI, Rev. Canon Robert Alan Schiesler officiating.
