Ronald Wesley Onken

May 15, 1937 – April 21, 2025

Ronald Wesley Onken, a cherished patriarch and friend, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025, in Fennville, Michigan, at the age of 87. Born on May 15, 1937, in Douglas, Michigan, Ronald's life was one rich with love, laughter, and dedication to his community.

Ronald's journey began as the son of Onke and Alice Onken, and he grew to be a man of integrity and warmth. His life was shared for over 61 years with his loving wife, Shirley Anderson Onken, who predeceased him, leaving a legacy of devotion and family values. Together, they raised a family that grew to encompass multiple generations, each of whom benefited from Ronald's wisdom and humor.

He is survived by his children, Kathy Jensen and her husband Bob, Linda Thompson and her husband George; his grandchildren, Brant Higgins, Christopher Higgins, Aaron Wightman, Shawn Thompson, and Troy Thompson; and his great-grandchildren, Tanner Higgins, Miro Greensmith, Carter Thompson, Peyton Thompson, Isaac Thompson, and Willow Higgins. The family tree extended to welcome his great-great-grandchild, Iri Higgins. Ronald is also remembered by his brother, John Onken, and his wife, Wendy, who together share in the family's loss and celebration of his life.

Ronald's work as a machinist was marked by precision and a strong work ethic. His professional life was complemented by an active involvement with the Pearl United Methodist Church, where his faith and fellowship were cornerstones of his life. A lifelong resident of Fennville, he was a familiar and friendly face to many, always ready with a story or a joke.

An avid outdoorsman, Ronald found joy in the simplicity of nature. He loved to hunt and was often found boating, taking in the beauty of Michigan's lakes and rivers. His favorite beer, Milwaukee's Best, was a staple of his leisure time, enjoyed in the company of friends and family. Ronald's passion for horses was well known, as was his love for playing Sunday card games, which were filled with laughter and camaraderie.

Those who knew Ronald will fondly remember him as a loving and funny man. His sense of humor was infectious, and his ability to bring a smile to anyone's face was one of his most endearing qualities. His love for his family was unwavering, and he instilled in them the values of kindness, generosity, and the importance of staying connected.

As we bid farewell to Ronald Wesley Onken, we celebrate a life well-lived. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories told by those who loved him and the countless lives he touched. Ronald's legacy is one of love, laughter, and the simple pleasures of life, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Ronald Wesley Onken will be laid to rest in Fennville, Michigan, where his spirit will continue to watch over the town and people he held so dear.
