Obituary

Roger John Marcy III (Bumpa) (88) was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and honesty which included the occasional lack of filter. His love for his eight grandchildren and 16 A½ great-grandchildren was peppered with resounding renditions of "Mairzy Doats" while watching them play and learn to swim on Goshorn Lake and most recently Silver Lake. Other famous songs included "Skinnimarinky", "Went to the Animal Fair" and the always inappropriate "Too Fat Polka" at which they would laugh every time. Shortly after "Mairzy Doats" hit the radio, Bumpa enlisted in the Navy. He served on the USS Henley and USS Bountiful and was proudly, honorably discharged on his birthday. Medals included: WWII Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal. Bumpa loved working as an IBEW Local 134 electrician in Chicago from from 1946 to 1988. He retired to his favorite place, Saugatuck, where he was passionate about golf, boat rides, fishing, and sitting riverside talking to passers by (most of whom knew him) and enjoying the constant parade of boats. He never tired of boat rides down the river or up to Holland. After worrying he'd never have a boat ride again (he did) his concern changed to worries that Hospice was going to kick him out because he just kept on living. He enjoyed much of his bonus miracle time on earth. Bumpa passed peacefully on his 67th wedding anniversary, testimony to a long, healthy marriage. He and Pat met at University of Illinois and he was extremely loving and protective of her. His biggest heartbreak was losing his daughter Chris when she was only 32. He retained strong relationships with his three surviving children: Donna Peel (Mike), Roger Marcy (Laurie) and Steve Marcy (Brenda) and his grandchildren: Jessica Loos (Darren), Steve Marcy (Heidi), Shannon Marcy, Amber Marcy, Amy Gutierrez (Mike), Heather Cole (Dathan), John Sullivan and Ryan Sullivan as well as his great-grandchildren. So raise a glass to Bumpa. You might just hear him say, "Here's mud in your eye." In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Holland 270 Hoover Blvd Holland, MI 49423. www.hollandhospice.org There will be a Celebration of life on September 26, 2015. Details to follow.
