Obituary

Robert M. Line passed away at his home on April l3, 2007, just l2 days shy of his 89th birthday. Bob lived his entire life in Fennville. After serving in the Pacific Theater in WW II and being wounded, Bob returned to Fennville to run the family farm. He was remarkably handy with all things that had to do with equipment and electronics. He was creative in inventing ways to make the farm work easier and more efficient. Despite his age, Bob remained active in doing things on the farm until just the last several years. In fact, when he turned 82 he limited himself to climbing only twenty feet up the silo! Bob was an intelligent and kind man. He prided himself on being independent and self-sufficient. He made the best black raspberry jam I've even tasted. He was an avid reader, and he loved listening to the ball game and watching western movies. Bob also enjoyed crossword puzzles, motorcycles, cats, and cows. Inside this quiet and unassuming man was a mischievous, fun-loving boy. When Bob let the impishness out he was charming, and when you earned a smile or a laugh from his, it felt like a gift. Bob was preceded in death by his entire family; his parents, Otto and Genevieve Line, his elder brother, Donald Line, of Fennville, and his younger brother, Alan Line, of Elburn, Illinois. He is survived by four cousins and their families; first cousin, Dorothea Downey, Rajala (Greenville, Texas), and second cousins Karen Downey Gartside (Elburn, Illinois), Jo Ellen Downey-Greer (East Lansing, Michigan), and Brian Robbins Downey, (Madison, Wisconsin). The family would like to take this opportunity to thank two people who have meant a great deal to Bob; Barbara Jean Whitaker and Charles Willie Whitaker, from Pullman, Michigan. Barb met Bob delivering his mail seven years ago. Since then, she and Charlie have helped to keep the farm alive, housing their horses and animals there, and looking in on Bob. Bob grew to regard Barb as a daughter, and Barb regarded him as her Dad. Recently, when Bob became ill, Barb and Charlie moved in to help him and, in the end, provided round the clock nursing care and companionship. Funeral services for Bob will be held at the Chappell Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at l:00 p.m., followed by a service at the Fennville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Bob Line to the Fennville Library, or to the Christain Science Society in Saugatuck.
