IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ralph Stears
Mcmahon
May 12, 1942 – July 8, 2025
Ralph Stears McMahon, a cherished educator, devoted family man, and avid traveler, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at his home in Fennville, MI. Born on May 12, 1942, in Chicago, IL, to the late John and Margaret (Stears) McMahon, Ralph's life was a testament to the power of love, education, and adventure.
Ralph's journey began in the bustling city of Chicago, where he grew up with his brothers, John and George McMahon. While George predeceased him, Ralph is survived by his brother John and sister-in-law Judy, as well as his sister-in-law Kathy McMahon, and his brother-in-law James Johnson. Ralph's early years were filled with the warmth of a close-knit family, setting the stage for the loving relationships he would foster throughout his life.
After earning his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and completing his Master's Degree in Education at Western Michigan University, Ralph dedicated over 30 years to shaping young minds as a Chemistry Teacher and Counselor at Dowagiac, South Haven, Saugatuck and University Lake schools in Hartland, Wisconsin, before spending the last 27 years at Fennville Public Schools. His passion for education was evident in the countless students he inspired, and his legacy within the school districts are indelible. Ralph's colleagues and students will remember him not only for his knowledge and guidance but also for the genuine care he extended to everyone. Ralph also spent many summers driving dune buggies for family, friends, and visitors from all around the world. To this day, he still holds the second most rides driven at the Saugatuck Dune Rides with an impressive 8,038 rides.
Ralph's heart was truly at home with his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Ann (Johnson) McMahon, and their three children, Jeffrey (Brenda) McMahon, Matthew (Susan) McMahon, and Kristin (Brad) McMahon Miller. His role as a husband and father was one he cherished deeply, and the love he shared with his family was the cornerstone of his life. The joy he found in family was multiplied with the arrival of his six grandchildren, Tyler, Trevor, Brittany, Rachel, Mackenzie, and Allie, who brought him immeasurable happiness and pride.
Beyond his professional and family life, Ralph had a zest for travel and exploration. He and Mary Ann shared a love for cruises and bus trips, taking them to distant shores and creating memories that would last a lifetime. Ralph's spirit of adventure was matched by his love for living on Hutchins Lake, where he found tranquility in floating in the lake and spending time with family.
Those who knew Ralph will remember him as a loving individual, whose kindness and warmth touched everyone he met. His ability to connect with people, whether through a shared interest in science or a simple conversation by the lake, left a lasting impression on many.
Ralph Stears McMahon lived a life full of love, learning, and laughter. His legacy will continue to live on through his family, the students he mentored, and the many lives he enriched. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring impact he has made on the world. Ralph's journey may have come to a close, but the memories he created will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
