Phyllis P. Sorensen, age 87, of Holland, died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the Holland Community Hospital. Born Phyllis Patton McMurdo, on August 25, 1922 she was the daughter of James Ralph and Margaret May (Lyons) McMurdo. After High School Phyllis attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL for then transferred to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where she majored in Dietetics. She was married to Lt. Earl Sorensen of the U.S. Marine Corps June 13, 1942. Earl was sent to the Pacific War Zone in November, 1942. While Earl was away three years Phyllis worked for the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service at Monsanto Chemical Company as an Associate Chemist. During these years she also graduated from Summers Business College. Most of her life she was a Homemaker at their home in Ganges, MI where they lived for 46 years. The last 15 years they spent in Chicago where Earl was Executive Vice President of the H.D. Hudson Manufacturing Company. On his retirement they returned to Ganges. Phyllis was active in the Ganges United Methodist Church. For many years she taught in Education Leadership Schools and Laboratory Schools for Church School teachers as a certified Lab Instructor for the United Methodist Church. In 1992 the Sorensens moved to Freedom Retirement Village in Holland, MI. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Earl in 1996 and by her daughter, Dr. Gail Sorensen in 1998. She is survived by one daughter Dr. Lynn Sorensen Ripley of New York City, nieces Marcia Mobley, Elaine Walker, and nephews Dale and Alan Walker. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday May 10, 2010 at the Ganges United Methodist Church, and a Service of Remembrance will be 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010 at Freedom Village in Holland, MI, with Rev.
