Obituary

Marian Ellen Overhiser, age 98, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 22, 2021. Marian was born October 13, 1922, in South Haven, Michigan. She was the fifth of seven children of William Braton and Minnie Bushee, fruit farmers in Casco Township. Marian graduated from South Haven High School and Western Michigan University. She married Robert Overhiser Sr., the love of her life, in 1942. Robert Sr. preceded her in death in 2007. Marian graduated from South Haven High School at the age of 16. She was eager to begin her chosen career in teaching, but being too young, had to wait another year before she could attend County Normal, the teachers' certifying authority at the time. She taught for many years in one-room rural schools in western Allegan County, until she was recruited by the Fennville Public Schools to join their elementary school staff. She was known as an excellent, yet firm teacher, commanding attention so her students could learn. Her dedication to educational excellence was noticed by the Superintendent who tapped her to fill in mid-year as the Anna Michen Elementary Principal, an assignment then made permanent. She dedicated her life to the education of young minds, retiring from Fennville Public Schools in 1982. She and Bob then spent the next 23 years as snowbirds, wintering in their home in Central Florida. Marian's favorite pastime was sewing quilts and visiting with family and friends. After Bob's death, she found a new talent for writing and at the age of 85, began penning her book entitled, "My Life Story." It took three years to complete the 400 paged manuscript which provides insight into her and Bob's individual early lives, pre- and post- World War II years, and the joys of living together for 65 years. She presented a hardcover copy to each of her children and grandchildren who have drawn inspiration from their heritage. She is survived by three children: Robert Overhiser Jr. and wife Betsy Slusser; Barbara (Overhiser) and husband Kevin Souders; Constance (Overhiser) and husband Dayle Harrison; and two brothers: Lawrence Bushee of Marietta, Georgia; and Richard Bushee of Fennville. Marian has eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, ages ranging from 3 months to 15 years. Marian and Bob were members of the Ganges United Methodist Church. Marian will be interred next to her husband at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, after Graveside Services with immediate family, the Rev. Marcia Tucker of Fennville officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Ganges United Methodist Church or Golden Orchards, Fennville. Service Details.
