Obituary

Letha Hicks Crane, age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 25, 2007, surrounded by family. Throught her life, she was admired as a women of great intelligence, natural nobility, and indomitable loving spirit. Letha spent her childhood years in the desert of New Mexico until joining her brother, Walter Hicks, and his wife in Michigan in her teens. She graduated valedictorian from Fennville High School and then Davenport Business College. In her career, she managed payroll for Michigan Fruit Canners. After marrying Albert Crane in 1939 she and Albert together presided over the operations of the Crane Fruit Farm near Fennville, where she started the regions's first U-pick program. Constantly active in the local community, Letha gave generously of her time to the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Band Boosters. She was also a true world-citizen, an avid reader who never ceased being a devoted student of history, culture, and current events, and always encouraged others to do the same. She is survived by her loving husband and partner of 68 years, Albert, and their two children; Calvin, who is with the U.S. State Department in Iraq, and Coleen (Gremore), who is currently teaching in Nevada. She has seven thriving grandchildren, and welcomed a great grandson in October. According to her wishes, there will be no funeral services, and her ashes will be scattered in the Crane Farm orchards. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Fennville District Library or Holland Rescue Mission would apt to honor her legacy. An informal open house for the many who knew Letha will be held at the site of the family's Crane Pie Pantry Restaurant west of Fennville on Thursday, March 29th between 1 and 3pm.
