Obituary

Kenneth M. Sargent, 88, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by Freda, his wife of 61 years; his four children, Dennis Sargent of Muskegon Heights, Susan Wozniak of Holland, Phil Sargent and Leora Bennett of Fennville and Loren and Becky Sargent of Fennville. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Ken and Julie Wozniak, Nikole Sargent and David Sargent, all of Fennville. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith, Rhea, Phoebe and Gladys and three brothers, Charles, Howard, and Carroll. Ken was a veteran of WW II. He served in the army for 49 months in the European Theater. He was attached to the 116th Ordinance Medium Maintenance Company and served in the Third Army under Gen. Patton. In recognition of his military service, he was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Eame Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. After serving his country, Ken returned home to work on the family farm. During this time, he served as treasurer of the Reid School Board. After retiring from farming in 1975, Ken worked as caretaker of the Ganges Township cemeteries. He continued this work until January of this year. Ken was a member of the Ganges Baptist Church and was strongly involved with it for a number of years. He served as president for ten of those years. Ken was loved by many and deeply missed by his family. The family invites anyone interested in celebrating his life to join them at Chappell Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2008. A luncheon at the Ganges Baptist Church will follow the service. Memorial donations in Kenneth's honor may be made to the American Cancer Society.
