Obituary

John Gary Vermeulen

March 24, 1953 – July 22, 2024

John Gary Vermeulen, 71, of Fennville, MI passed away Monday, July 22, 2024. After multiple bouts with cancer throughout his life he succumbed to Lymphoma at his home with his family at his side.  Born March 24, 1953, in Holland, MI, John grew up on 63rd. St. just north of the Red Barn Theater. He was the son of the late Jacobus(Jack) and Adrianna(Adri) Vermeulen and was the husband of Gladis (Garcia) Vermeulen.

John graduated Saugatuck High Scholl in 1971. John's first love was motorcycles, he owned many bikes like a Triumph, Harley Knucklehead, 1977 Super Glide, BMW, and a Ducati. John had been a master carpenter and had worked at many jobs including Woodways Custom Cabinet Makers in Holland. He loved to fish during his time in Florida. He was also a talented marksman and had competed in many shooting tournaments.  John was a motorcycle enthusiast and loved to ride whenever he was able.  He was a jack of all trades and could fix just about anything including electrical work, plumbing and construction.

Along with Gladis, his wife of thirteen years, John is survived by his children, Elizabeth Burgos, Philip Burgos and Christian Burgos; a brother, Paul Vermeulen; and grandchildren, Trinity, Niko, Christopher, Jaiden, Bella and Melani (who is on the way). Nephews; Sean, Eric, Jacob, and great niece Rylee.

The family will receive friends at Chappell Funeral Home on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and a memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM officiated by Pastor Brandon Beebe.

A quote from John's dear friend Dennis:

"There are only two people that are worthy of such praise and John is one of them. It goes like this…I never knew one person that liked John, everyone loved him. John may have never demonstrated heroism in combat, worthy of a statue, nor served in politics or would have had his painting hanging on his wall. His contributions to society are more immense. He was a kind, decent human being. When he is measured in that sense, he is a mountain of a man compared to others, worthy of our undying admiration and respect. We should all strive to adopt Johns's kindness and decency. I for one will miss him very much."
