Obituary

John Edward Schlack, 80, born March 15, 1935 in VanBuren County to Jess and Esther Bradley, John was one of 21 children. Raised by adoptive parents Fred and Helen Schlack, John spent his formative years on the farm in Casco. After high school graduation John went to work at Everett Piano factory in South Haven. John also raced cars at local tracks. On June 9, 1956 he married Mary Ann Adkin and they made their home in Casco. John was a volunteer fireman with Casco Township for around 25 years. John went to work at Fisher Body, GM in Kalamazoo and retired after 30 years in 1996. During this time he drove school bus for Fennville Public schools for about 10 years. He was a 4-H Leader for 28 years helping youth learn how to make bluebird houses and other woodworking projects. During his 19 years of retirement John and MaryAnn enjoyed many camping trips with the Wolverine Camp Club. They were also able to travel some with their grown children to places like Texas, Florida and Hawaii. John was a member of the Casco United Methodist Church. A devoted Nascar and Detroit Tiger fan, John shared these loves with his six children: Dian (Jim Liepe), John (Rhonda), Carrie (Fred Murphy), Steve (Irma), Robert (Arlene) and Tim. Known surviving siblings are: Mable (George Foote), Bill (Mary Klump), Betty Warren, Pastor William Bradley, and Harriet Taylor. John is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, 6 children, 11 grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 14 step great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren, at least 5 siblings, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, many nieces and nephews. John leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter for those whose life he touched. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 24, 2015 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Casco United Methodist Church with services at 11:00 a.m. officiating will be Rev. David Meister. Burial will be in McDowell Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Casco United Methodist Church or 4-H Camp Kidwell. An online registry book is available at www.chappellfuneralhome.com.
