John Austin Cravens was born 2/15/1933, in Chicago, to Thomas and Gertrude Cravens. He graduated Salutatorian, 1950, Foreman HS. He married Miriam (Jody) Engelman 8/15/1953. He graduated Purdue University 1954, B.S. Civil Engineering. John served U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1954-56. He worked for General Motors, Euclid, and White Motor, 1956-78. He was a financial services advisor, and adjunct professor at Ursuline College. John served as Geauga County (Ohio) Treasurer, and Geauga County Fair Treasurer. He had a 12-year appointment as Allegan County (Michigan) Road Commissioner, helping lead restoration of the New Richmond Bridge and serving on the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council. John continued as a tax preparer for many grateful clients for many years. John's service included: 50-year member of the Englewood, Colorado, Masonic Lodge, and member of Royal Arch Masons of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Chapter, Knights Templar of Painesville, Ohio, Al Koran Shriners International of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Lions Club, Rotary International, and the Chardon, Ohio, School Board. John co-founded the non-profit Lower Scott Lake Dredging Project, Inc. He volunteered for We Care and Kids Hope. A lifetime United Methodist Church member, he served in many capacities, including singing in choir. John is survived by his wife Jody of almost 60 years, and children Cynthia (David) Minnich, Holland, John (Patricia) Cravens, Jr., Mazon, IL, Christine (Michael) Beaudoin, Plymouth, Jane (Mark) Myers, Lancaster, PA, and Charles (Catherine) Cravens, St. Joseph, 17 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Gertrude, and brother Thomas. A Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Casco United Methodist Church, 880 66th St. South Haven, MI with visitation from 10:00 a.m. till service time.
