Obituary

Joan K. Hamlin, age 84, of Fennville, Michigan passed away Sunday, March 06, 2016 at Holland Hospital. Joan was born in Holland, MI on August 30, 1931. She attended Saugatuck High School where she saw and heard about "this boy named Fred". Apparently what she heard must have been good because they have been married for 66 years, 6 months and 6 days. Joan and Fred raised their family starting in Holland, then Douglas and Watervliet, Michigan where Joan was a home-maker, Girl Scout leader and organizer, and a teacher. She graduated from Lake Michigan Community College in 1967 and received her teaching degree from Western Michigan University in 1968. She taught third grade for 14 years at Washington Elementary School in Coloma. Joan retired from teaching when she recognized her calling into God's ministry. She and Fred both attended Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois and received their Masters of Divinity degree. During her pastorate, she served the United Methodist churches in Bridgeman, Burnips and Monteray Center and Quincy. After retirement, Fred and Joan served Saugatuck UMC for 3 years. Joan enjoyed many hobbies and activities, such as gardening, knitting, reading and making lovely cards which she generously shared, sending joy and well wishes to family and friends. She and Fred enjoy membership with Michigan Knights of the Highway and her years of camping and motor home traveling were favorite activities. Joan was currently active in P.F.L.A.G. And Douglas Congregational United Church of Christ. Joan Kathleen Hamlin is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fred, daughters, Ruth Pearson and Wendy Hamlin; Grandchildren, Crystal Bell (Alison Bell-Hecimovich), John Bell (Nicole), Tony Pearson (Stephanie), Tom Pearson.
