Jeane Lorraine McClaskey, age 89, passed away peacefully at The Inn at Freedom Village in Holland on Tuesday, December 24, 2013. Lorraine was born at home on the family farm on Aug 24, 1924, in Dayton, Iowa. Her parents Raymond and Eugenia Eklund were full blood Swedes. She graduated from Dayton High School and went to the "big city" Des Moines to attend business school and there she met her future husband Eugene McClaskey whom she married in 1945. The family moved from Des Moines, Iowa to Jenison, MI in 1959 for a better job opportunity for Gene. Lorraine became involved in community groups and was an active member of the Grandville United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was the church librarian. She worked for the Grandville Public Schools as an elementary librarian for 23 years. Lorraine greatest love was unequivocally her family. It showed in her baking a multitude of sugar cookies and sending to the college grandchildren in coffee cans. She was a whiz at putting a meal on the table for family and friends at a moment's notice. She always had books and toys around for her "little grands". Lorraine remained interested and involved in the lives of her children and their families throughout her life. Her family will greatly miss her spirit, loving ways and comfort as she always had open arms ready to hug. Remembering their mother are daughters, Cheryl and Bill Bouma of Holland and Kris Downey of St Petersburg, FL. Lorraine was also blessed with 4 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She has one surviving brother Dr. Harold and Audrey Eklund from Iowa. Lorraine was married for 52 years before Gene's passing in 1997. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at Grandville United Methodist Church, 3140 S. Wilson, Grandville, MI. on Saturday, February 15, 2013 at 2PM. Family and friends are invited to a lite reception at the church after the service. Memorials may be made to her church, listed above, SECOM or Holland Hospice.
