Obituary

Howard Clifton Batey, a cherished family man and respected community member, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2024, at the age of 92 in Holland, MI. Born on May 3, 1931, in Fennville, MI, Howard was the beloved son of the late Clifton and Edith (Sargent) Batey.

Howard proudly served his country as a member of the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, a time that shaped his character and instilled in him a sense of duty and resilience. After his service, he returned to his roots in Michigan and embarked on a dedicated career as a machine operator at Rockwell, where he remained until his well-deserved retirement.

Howard's life was a testament to love and commitment, beautifully exemplified by his late wife, Dorla (Thurow) Batey. Together, they built a life filled with joy and purpose, raising their children Lynn (Rafael) Dominguez, Michael Batey, and Scott Batey. Howard's role as a father was one he cherished deeply, and his legacy continued to flourish through his adored grandchildren, Paul Dominguez and Kailyn (Michael) Raphael, Joseph Batey, and his treasured great-grandchildren, John and Keithen Raphael.

His sister, Patricia (Eugene) Slotman, will fondly remember Howard for his adventurous spirit and the loving memories they shared throughout their lives.

Howard's retirement years were as active and fulfilling as the decades that preceded them. He was a man who found solace and pleasure in the simplicity of life's joys. An avid woodworker, he created beautiful pieces that not only showcased his skill but also his desire to give to those he loved. Fishing was more than a hobby for Howard; it was a time for reflection and connection with nature. But above all, Howard's greatest joy was found in the laughter and presence of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Those who knew Howard would describe him as adventurous, loving, and handy. He approached life with a can-do attitude and a heart ready to love and be loved. His presence was a comfort, his laughter a melody, and his hands were rarely still, always working on a project or reaching out to help others.

As we bid farewell to Howard Clifton Batey, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a man well-loved. His story does not end here, for it lives on in the hearts of those he touched. Howard's legacy is one of love, family, and the quiet strength that defines a life of purpose and joy.

Howard's viewing will be on Friday, March 29, 2024, in Chappell Funeral Home from 10:00am - 11:00am and funeral service to begin at 11:00am officiated by Pastor Ronnie Ewing with burial to follow at Fennville City Cemetery.
