Obituary

Helen Hutchins passed away peacefully on March 29 after a lingering illness. She was born on February 18, 1938, to Robert and Laura Mae Bay and spent her childhood years in Elmore, Ohio. With a life-long passion for music, Helen graduated from the University of Toledo with a major in music and went on to teach music at Watervliet Public Schools in Michigan. She also directed many summer theater productions there. Music continued to play a major role later in Helen's life as she provided music lessons and shared her musical talents as organist, pianist, and vocalist at the United Methodist Church. Helen's interest in antiques eventually led her to open and operate Helen's Antiques in Glenn--a 30-year venture. Helen was married to Donald Hutchins for 23 years. That marriage in 1983 brought two "instant" grandchildren, and a third followed in 1993. Helen cherished her grandchildren, her niece and nephew, and her great niece and nephew. Although not native to Glenn, Helen was deeply involved with her beloved "Pancake Town" and worked to promote it through the Glenn Area Business Association and events like the Circle of Lights. Helen served the United Methodist Church, both in Glenn and in Riverside. Helen was preceded in death by the love-of-her life, Donald Hutchins, and her parents, Robert and Laura Mae Bay. She leaves behind her sister, Alice Nietzke of Mission Viejo, CA; step-sons John (Greta) Hutchins, and Michael Hutchins of Glenn; three grandchildren Margot Hutchins (Karl Walczak), Travis (Lauren) Hutchins, and Tobias Hutchins; a nephew, Ernie Robert (Buster) Nietzke; and a niece, Heather Krenwinkel, and her children Kelsey and Kyle Krenwinkel. A memorial service for Helen will be held 12 noon on June 13 at the Glenn United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Glenn United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
