IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn Laverne
(Huitt) Lacy
July 20, 1932 – May 16, 2025
Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend Evelyn Lacy returned to the Lord on May 16th, 2025.
Evelyn Laverne Huitt was born in Hamilton Michigan on July 20th, 1932, to Antoinette Stankey Huitt and Marvin Hewitt Sr. She was a lifelong resident of Allegan County and married Clois Lacy there on March 11th, 1949. They settled in Fennville and had four beautiful children, Linda, David, Richard and Brenda. Evelyn was fiercely dedicated to her family and was the sort of housewife that would have made Martha Stewart proud.
Once her children were older, she decided to go to work and took a job at Fennville Public Schools. She would continue to work for the school system for over thirty years. She made such a positive impact that some students nicknamed her "Mom". Even 25 years later, she was still being recognized in public by former students who remembered how kind she had been to them.
Evelyn also had a lifelong relationship with the Lord. She was raised in church and went on to be a founding member of Fennville Baptist Church. She lived her faith and genuinely enjoyed helping others at every opportunity. She truly believed in and followed the teachings of Jesus Christ and took pride in instilling these values into her children, particularly compassion and empathy. Her church was her second home, and she met some of her best friends there.
She was an avid reader, skilled at embroidery, self-taught pianist and could identify and grow almost any plant or flower. She would give great advice with quick wit and a twinkle in her eye, always using just the right words of encouragement. She loved to be a host and cooked incredible holiday meals for all four generations of her family until she was 80 years old.
Her flower garden was immaculate. She was a true and loyal friend who never judged anyone. She was a beautiful singer that loved to sing hymns. She lived on her own into her 90s, never left the house without lipstick, and was a guiding light to all that knew her. She will be missed on earth, but heaven is rejoicing.
Evelyn is survived by her son Richard (Carolyn) Lacy, daughter Brenda (Mark) Homkes, grandchildren Brian Cupp, Julie Andersen, Amy Lacy, Shane Lacy and Meghan (Thomas) Debruyne, great grandchildren Joe Humy, Brandon Cupp, Stella Swindells, Levi Swindells and Henry Swindells. She is preceded in death by her husband Clois Lacy, daughter Linda (Shelby) Cupp, son David Lacy and grandson Zachary Lacy.
Evelyn's funeral service will be on Wednesday, May 21, at 11:00am with an hour's visitation beforehand in the Living Waters Community Church, located at 5458 124th Avenue, Fennville, MI 49408. Graveside service to follow at Fennville City Cemetery.
