Obituary

Edwin O. Johnsen, 82, passed away peacefully with his beloved wife, Janet, at his side, on Monday, February 20, 2017 at his home in Holland, Michigan. He was born on December 15, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York to Edvin and Annie (Eskedal) Johnsen. Ed grew up in East Hartland, Connecticut and graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minnesota in 1952. Ed is survived by Janet (Licence) Johnsen, his loving wife of 60 years. Together they had four children: Kathie (Johnsen) Read and her husband Steve of Avon, Connecticut and their son, Ethan of Rochester, New York; Vicky (Johnsen) Avery and her husband Wendell, their daughters, Jacquelyn and Jessica of Stafford Springs, Connecticut; Christopher Johnsen and his wife, Claudia, their daughters, Freya, Signy and Brynja of Springfield, Massachusetts. Ed was preceded in death by his eldest son, Gregory. Ed was a veteran of the US Army, serving three years stationed in Germany as a helicopter crew chief, achieving the rank of E5 staff sergeant. He worked as a union carpenter and recently celebrated nearly 50 years in the Connecticut Carpenter's Union Local #43. Ed was an avid fisherman and his ability to catch fish was legendary among his friends and family. He enjoyed the fellowship of the Men's Prayer Group at Zion Lutheran Church in Holland. Ed was a voracious reader and enjoyed watching the TV classics, his special favorite was the original MacGyver series. A memorial service to celebrate Ed's life will be held in Connecticut at the family's convenience.
