Obituary

Donald E. (Dutch) Atkins, 90, of Fennville died on Sunday afternoon, October 20, 2013 at Grace of Douglas nursing home. Born August 15, 1923, he was the son of John Y. Atkins and Mary (Leedy) Atkins. He married his wife of of 64 years Ruth (Bale) Atkins on September 28, 1949. He was in the US Army Airborne, serving in the 471st bomber squadron as a para trooper in Germany and France, during WWII. Dutch worked for Consumers Power Company as a lineman for 35 years retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Fennville Area Fire Department for over 30 years, and was one of the founders of the Fennville Rod & Gun Club. Surviving is his wife Ruth, son John and Rosanne Atkins, daughter Joyce Ballast and Gary Richardson all of Fennville, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and one sister Dorothy Morgan of South Haven, MI. A memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 26, 2013, with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Chappell Funeral Home 637 W. Main St. Fennville, Michigan with Ms. Marcia Tucker officiating, burial will be in the Fennville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Fennville Area Fire Department.
