It is with profound sadness that I announce the unexpected passing of my loving husband and companion for 33 years, Bruce A Zylstra on September 3, 2026.

Bruce (70), of Fennville, MI, was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on December 23, 1955, to his loving parents Gerrit Glenn and Bonnie Marie (Luyk) Zylstra of Jenison, MI.

Bruce graduated from Jenison High School and later took some college classes at Grand Valley State University. He built his life and career through skill, dedication, and pride in his craft.

His work was in woodworking, and he was regarded as a professional wood artisan with 49 years of experience. For 21 of those years, he worked at Zeeland Architectural Components, where he contributed to projects that became part of some of the most notable places in Michigan and beyond.

Among the many works he helped create were pieces for the Henry Ford Estate, Four Winds Casino, and the Michigan State Capitol. He also built all of the bars and restaurants’ cabinetry for the Book Tower in Detroit. His craftsmanship reached other distinguished locations as well, including the Virginia State Capitol, Maryland State House, Waterford Place in Hudsonville, Wardman West in Washington, D.C., the University of Michigan Wolverine Village, and Little Caesars Arena. Bruce took great pride in the quality of his work and in knowing that his hands helped shape spaces that would be enjoyed by many.

Bruce loved living in the country and was proud of his home and property. He found joy in gardening and especially enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables. He grew many of the ingredients for his favorite stewed tomatoes, a dish that reflected both his patience and his appreciation for the rewards of honest labor. He also loved the Dawn Redwood trees he planted in his yard and took great satisfaction in watching them grow. Fishing was another favorite pastime, and one special memory he often shared was taking his father fishing at Hutchins Lake in Fennville, Michigan. When Bruce traveled, he preferred to drive so he could enjoy the scenery along the way. Above all, he will be remembered as one of the biggest fans of the Detroit Lions, a loyalty he carried with enthusiasm and unwavering spirit.

Bruce is survived and deeply missed by his wife, Tracy L. Barnes Zylstra; his son, Jayson Zylstra of Sparta, Michigan; his stepson, Philup Dalton of Zeeland, Michigan; his stepdaughter, Felisha Holtsclaw of Pullman, Michigan; his brother, Steve Zylstra of Scottsdale, Arizona; his sister, Mary Meyers of Caledonia, Michigan; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerrit and Bonnie Zylstra, and by his step-grandson, Joseph Dalton.

Those who knew Bruce will remember a man who valued family, took pride in his work, and lived with a steady appreciation for the world around him. His presence, his craftsmanship, and his love for the life he built will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

We will be having a Celebration of Life sometime in the Spring of 2027 at Bruce's favorite park, Hagar Park in Jenison, Michigan.
