Obituary

Albert H. Crane of Fennville passed away March 22, 2013, aged 96. Albert was preceded in death by wife Letha, brothers Edward and John Calvin and sister Emilyn. He is survived by siblings Shirley, Elizabeth and Robert; children Coleen and Calvin; grandchildren Monica, Yvonne, Lorien, Jacob and Nathaniel; great-grandchildren Cole and Austin; and step grandchildren Jennifer, Aimee, Samuel and Madison. A great-grandson of Fennville's founder Elam Fenn, Albert and his wife Letha raised their family just west of the village, operating a fruit farm and launching an earth-moving business in 1939. It is a rare section of western Allegan County not impacted by the work Albert loved: clearing for orchards and crops and building waterways, dams, and ponds. Starting school at one-room Peach Belt School, Albert championed educational opportunity for area kids. He served as Secretary and then President of the Fennville Public School Board during a period of intense school construction and expansion. His warm sensibility, optimistic outlook and ready smile will be missed. Respecting the wishes of the deceased, a public memorial will not be held. Memorial donations to benefit area schoolchildren would be graciously accepted to: Fennville Public High School Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 231, Fennville, MI 49408 (269) 561-7331.
