Obituary

Reed Jackson Martin, 85, of Pullman, MI passed away Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Born July 1, 1934 in Pullman, he was the son of the late Reed Eslic and Viola Pearl (Tesmer) Martin and was the husband of the late Evelyn (VanStedum) Martin, Virginia (Houdeck) Martin and Florence (Clark) Martin. Mr. Martin was a former member of Pullman Bible Church and, for more than twenty years, a member of Community United Congregational Church. He loved to volunteer his time to assist with church functions, especially the spaghetti dinners, and was the Superintendent of the Sunday School program there. He also enjoyed the time he spent singing with the South Haven area Men's Choir. Mr. Martin learned the value of hard work while growing up on the family farm. He and his family grew melons on their forty-acre farm. Throughout his time there he witnessed the evolution of farming technology as they transitioned from using horses to the doodlebug tractor to plow the fields. Mr. Martin continued to demonstrate a strong work ethic and desire to provide for his family for the rest of his life. He had worked for Everett Piano Company before going to work at Rockwell International where he worked for 25 years. He had also been employed as a delivery driver for Flemming Brothers Fuel Oil and finally at Car-Tech of Holland before settling into retirement. Above all else, however, Mr. Martin loved spending time with his family. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be dearly missed. Mr. Martin is survived by his sons, John (Jennifer) Martin and Dan (Sonia) Martin; sister-in-law, Diane Martin; granddaughters, Mellisa (Franklin) Bryan, Barbara (KC) Juntunen and Becca Sprague; and great-grandchildren, Abbie Juntunen, Bree Anna Sprague, Aurora Sprague and Douglas Sprague. In addition to his parents, Reed and Viola, he was preceded in death by his wives, Evelyn Martin, Virginia Martin and Florence Martin; brothers, Claude Martin and Jerry Martin; and granddaughter, Shannon Coombe.

The family will receive friends at Chappell Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place in Lee Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Reed’s name to the First Congregational Church, 54128 County Road 388, Grand Junction, MI 49056.
