As a little girl, we would visit Grandma a few times a month. I remember pulling up to the pastel blue/green house and being excited to see all the animals.

We would visit the chicken coops and gather eggs if there were any. There were always chickens running here and there along with an intimidating rooster. Grandma had a variety of animals over the years. From chihuahuas to chickens and even a peacock, we were always entertained! In fact, one time when we were visiting, I brought my friend Robyn. We were about 11 years old. We went outside to play and were harassed by the peacock. He was chasing us. He blocked our way back into the house and we were forced to stay in the car! We were scared, but we laughed and laughed!

When were in the house, we always sat in the living room. She would offer us a coke which was a highlight for me as a kid. We would cuddle the dogs and listen to my parents talk with her. I always tried to listen in on the conversation, but lost my way when Grandma would promptly switch to Spanish halfway through! I always thought it was because she was really getting into a story, but now as an adult, realize maybe she didn’t want me to understand what she was saying!

We moved away the summer before 6th grade and after that, my visits with Grandma were once a year. My memories are few, but the thing that will always live on with me is the way I felt (and feel) when I visit my dad’s family. I always felt loved. I really enjoyed the family gatherings where everyone would play volleyball or football (they even let me hike the ball!) and the dad’s would play basketball, and the kids would run around everywhere! We would eat lots of yummy Mexican food and go home feeling happy. I believe Grandma had a lot to do with this. She instilled a sense of family in all of her children, who continued this with their own families. I have tried to continue the importance of family with my own children, and my wish for them is to continue one day with their own children.

So thank you Grandma for helping to shape my love of family and I hope you rest in peace with Grandpa by your side. We love you.

My Grandma Aguilar was an amazing woman; loving each of her sons, daughter, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren to the fullest. She will be missed, but the memories will never be forgotten. We will love you forever, Grandma. 💛

My last grandparent passed away earlier this week. Although I haven't seen her in a few years I will miss her. I have many good memories of her. Beans on the stove. Tortillas at the ready. Pictures of family all over her house. Gifts from Mexico. Telenovelas. Chihuahua on her lap. Camay soap. Telling a story in English and then switching to Spanish at the good parts. Her laugh.
Love you, Grandma ❤

Your Mother Is Always With You -By an Unknown Author
Your mother is always with you…
She’s the whisper of the leaves
as you walk down the street.
She’s the smell of bleach in
your freshly laundered socks.
She’s the cool hand on your
brow when you’re not well.
Your mother lives inside
your laughter. She’s crystallized
in every tear drop…
She’s the place you came from,
your first home.. She’s the map you
follow with every step that you take.
She’s your first love and your first heart
break….and nothing on earth can separate you.
Not time, Not space…
Not even death….
will ever separate you
from your mother….
You carry her inside of you….
